Malaysian Organisation of pharmaceutical Industries (MOPI) as started by eight manufacturers, which were local, foreign and joint venture companies.

MOPI was incorporated on 6 March 1981 as a company limited by guarantee. Raja Zainal Abidin bin Raja Haji Takchik of Raza Manufacturing Sdn Bhd was MOPI's first president.
MOPI's membership is restricted manufacturers with factories in Malaysia that are licensed by the drug Control Authority, Ministry of health, to manufacture pharmaceuticals.
MOPI's original membership of eight has grown to the current 34. All major pharmaceutical manufacturers in the country are members of MOPI.

Main Activities:
MOPI, in co-operation with the government and other bodies, represent the interests of the pharmaceutical industry.

Promotion and development of the industry

Foster closer co-operation among members of the Industry.

Facilitate and encourage the development, exchange and transfer of information and technology, domestically and internationally.

Promote and facilitate orderly trade in life science products.


 
 

MOPI's Strategic Role:
The MOPI membership collectively reduces about 35 percent of Malaysia's medicine requirement. In terms of product range, MOPI members have the capabilities to manufacture more than 80 percent of the product categories in the National Essential Drugs List of Malaysia.

To a large extent, MOPI's existence has been a medium and catalyst for the rapid development and capitalisation of the local pharmaceutical industry during the last decade.

It has evolved into a modern, sophisticated sector of the Malaysian economy, and it is capable of producing a wide range of products in compliance with the WHO Code of Good Manufacturing Practice and internationally accepted pharmacopoeia standards.

MOPI has also taken on the role of training personnel in the industry in the latest technologies evolving in the industry, including training in validation procedures for processes as well as equipment and also in current Good Manufacturing Practice according to the European (PIC) Code as Malaysia is expected to be a member of the PIC/S soon.

Having invested in the high-technology machineries and equipment and formalized training, MOPI members now have the capability to manufacture a wide range of products including large and small injectables, novel drug delivery systems, high technology testing and analytical equipment to met inter-nationally accepted standards of quality assurance.

Research and development is an-other key area for the MOPI membership. The focus areas are product development, formulation improvement, dosage fabrication and novel drug delivery systems which are carried out either in-house or in collaboration with Universiti Sains Malaysia and other tertiary institutions in the country.

Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers:
MOPI is an association member of the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) and in that capacity serves as the pharmaceutical industry's liaison with other industries.

ASEAN Pharmaceutical Club:
MOPI represents the Malaysian Pharmaceutical industry in the ASEAN Pharmaceutical Industry Club, an organisation which it had helped to form under the ASEAN Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

MOPI is an honorary member of CICM Executive Committee.
International Medical University, Malaysia (IMU)
MOPI is a member of the Board of Studies - Bachelor of Pharmacy (Hons) of the lMU.

Member of Parenteral Drug Association, USA, an international association for pharmaceutical science and technology.

Dialogues with Minister of Health and National Pharmaceutical Control Bureau:
MOPI also holds regular dialogues with the Health Minister and the National Pharmaceutical Control Bureau to resolves issues affecting the industry.

Dialogues with Minister of International Trade & Industry:
Since 1984, MOPI has acted as representative for the Malaysian pharmaceutical industry in the annual dialogues with the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.

Dialogues with Minister of Domestic Trade & Consumer Affairs MOPI participates in the annual dialogue representing the industry on matters pertaining to intellectual property and consumer protection.

APE 2004 to be held at Kuala Lumpur in April

ASIA Pharma Expo 2004 (APE2004), a three-day international exhibition, will be held at Mid Valley Exhibition Centre, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia from April 21, 2004.

According to a press release received here, the exhibition, is exclusively focused towards pharmaceutical allied industries featuring pharma processing, packaging machinery and materials, biotechnology, alternative medicines, API, drug intermediates, healthcare products, environmental control equipments and services, analytical laboratory services and supplies, software for pharma industry and management trade publications, technical publications, trade associations, consultants, etc.

Malaysia to host Asia Pharma Expo 2004

MALAYSIA is coming up with the first ever international exhibition on pharmaceutical industry. This trade show is to be held in conjunction with the 9th Southeast Asian Healthcare Show and Conference 2004.

The Malaysian pharmaceutical market is worth USD 790 million and the growth rate is pegged at 8 to 10% per annum. There are total of 254 pharma formulation units and Malaysia has become one of the first countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to gain the membership in Europe's Pharmaceutical Inspection Co-operation Scheme (PIC/S) in January 2002. The recognition has enabled Malaysian pharma companies more easily to export their products to PIC/S members, mainly to the European Union. Against this backdrop, the event promises to be a mega show with international participation from countries like Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Philippines, Sri Lanka, India and China.

Malaysia to offer opportunities for Indian pharma companies

MALAYSIA is likely to emerge as a leading destination for Indian pharma companies in the South East Asia as India and Malaysia have many similarities in terms of environment and labour culture, says Paresh Jhurmarvala, Founder and CEO of Global Pharma Expo, which is conducting Asia Pharma Expo - 2004, the first pharma expo in Malaysia from April 21-23, 2004. The event is being organized by ABC Exhibitions and Global Pharma Expo, and is supported by Ministry of Health, Malaysian Organization of Pharmaceutical Industries, etc. This is also the first overseas exhibition endorsed by IDMA.

Malaysia presents the best opportunity for expansion in South East Asia as the present $450 million market of that country is growing at a rate of 10 percent every year, and the market would grow to US$790 million in the next two years.
