Asia Pharma Expo 2011, Bangladesh Exhibition: Instrumental for international pharma-allied suppliers to recognize in the South Asian pharmaceutical markets

Asia Pharma Expo 2011 (APE2011), the 8th international exhibition focusing the South Asian Pharmaceutical Industries was organized during February 24 to 26, 2011 at Bangbandhu International Conference Center, Dhaka, Bangladesh, which was concluded as one more successful landmark event in the region becoming highly resourceful to bring together the buyers and suppliers on one platform.

At APE2011, more than 424 Exhibiting Companies from 29 countries across the world (including Bangladesh, India, Japan, China, USA, UK, European Union, Gulf region, Taiwan, Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, etc.) exhibited their latest technologies and products / services to nearly 9,100 pharma trade professionals who attended the Show.

APE2011 was supported by Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of Peoples’ Republic of Bangladesh, Export Promotion Bureau (Bangladesh), Engineering Export Promotion Council (EEPC India), Pharmexcil (India), and Bulk Drug Manufacturers’ Association (BDMA India).

Asia Pharma Expo 2011 (APE2011) was organized by GPE Expo Pvt. Ltd., India jointly with the Bangladesh Association of Pharmaceutical Industries (BAPI). Asia Pharma Shows are being organized at Bangladesh since year 2003, and are proved serious and meaningful for the pharma fraternity among the South Asian region.

The Exhibitors at APE2011 displayed pharma processing & packaging machineries and materials, Analytical Lab Instruments and Supplies, Utilities, API and Raw Materials, Consultants, etc. to show case their latest technologies and services.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina inaugurated the Asia Pharma Expo 2011 as the Chief Guest. Prof. Dr. Modasser Ali, Hon’ble Advisor to Hon’ble Prime Minister for Ministry of Health & Family Welfare and Social Welfare Affairs, Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh; Dr. A. F. M. Ruhal Haque, Hon’ble Minister of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh; Lt. Col. (rtd) Muhammad Faruk Khan, Hon’ble Minister, Ministry of Commerce, Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh; Mr. Dilip Barua, Hon’ble Minister, Ministry of Industries, Govt. of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh were the Special Guests of the ceremony. While, Mr. Nazmul Hassan, MP & Advisor to Bangladesh Association of Pharmaceutical Industries (BAPI) delivered the Welcome Address and Mr. Salman F. Rahman, President, Bangladesh Association of Pharmaceutical Industries (BAPI) chaired the session.

Talking in the inaugural session of the 3-day 8th Asia Pharma Expo 2011 at Bangbandhu International Conference Center (BICC), Dhaka, Bangladesh on February 24, 2011, Thursday, the Prime Minister also asked them to take steps towards reducing the prices of the medicines, so that the masses could avail the lifesaving drugs and help the government keep its pledge to provide healthcare facilities to all the people.

Sheikh Hasina, MP, Hon’ble Prime Minister of the Peoples’ Republic of Bangladesh has asked the pharmaceutical companies to be more vigilant in preventing the marketing of sub-standard quality medicines.

Sheikh Hasina said that healthcare is one of the basic rights of the human beings, while quality medicine is the main element of healthcare.

The Prime Minister also asked the Quality Control Department of the Government to strengthen monitoring system to stop supply and sale of sub-standard medicines. She added that her government has been sincerely working to establish the right to healthcare for the people of Bangladesh. The Prime Minister has recognized the advances in science and technology, which have brought a revolutionary change in the pharmaceutical industry.

During her inaugural speech of APE2011 Show, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh expressed her satisfaction over the progress being made by the pharma sector of Bangladesh and noted that the country has earned over Tk 4 billion during the last fiscal by exporting medicines to over 83 countries. Currently about 97% of the domestic demand is met by the locally produced medicines. The Prime Minister, however, regretted that despite good strides in producing medicines, the country had been compelled to import 70% of the raw materials in the pharma sector. She stressed the importance of increasing supply of raw materials locally and said her government has taken steps to set up Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) Park near Daudkandi to produce raw materials for pharma industries.

She urged the entrepreneurs to take necessary steps including carrying out research for producing the raw materials within the country. “The government will extend all out support to this vital industry for its expansion including manufacturing raw materials,” Sheikh Hasina assured pharmaceutical entrepreneurs. Some 30 units will be will be set up in the park for producing raw materials for the pharmaceutical industry. Once it is set up, the demand of the raw materials will be met locally and a huge amount of the foreign exchange would be saved.

Regarding the herbal medicines, she said that the herbal medicine is spreading fast all over the world. There is a huge scope of expand herbal medicines in Bangladesh as the raw materials for herbal medicines are available in the country. The neighbouring countries like, India, Sri Lanka, and China have made substantial progress in the field of herbal medicine, the Prime Minister said. The demand for the herbal medicine and the herbal toiletries is increasing day by day in the European and American markets. At present, there is USD 43 billion herbal medicine markets in the world annually. Herbal medicine worth about USD 1.3 billion is sold in the USA alone every year, she added. “Some of the big pharma companies are producing herbal items along with the traditional allopathic medicines. I would like to request all the concerned to give proper attention in this regards.”

Industries Minister, Mr. Dilip Barua informed that, the government will provide all out support to boost the country’s pharmaceutical industry. He said that the government has identified the industry as a thrust sector in its national industry policy 2010 which has been approved by the cabinet recently. Mr. Barua was addressing as Special Guest at the inaugural function of APE2011 at Dhaka.

The sector has earned reputation globally exporting world-class quality drugs, he added. Mr. Barua urged the entrepreneurs in the pharma sector for working together to make the best utilization of the export market. “You have to look forward for Contract Manufacturing in many developed countries.” He suggested the entrepreneurs adding that, the neighbouring countries like India is much ahead in this regard and China and Turkey have also made remarkable progress.

At APE2011, a 3-day international exhibition, 29 EEPC Member companies exhibited under the EEPC India Pavilion, supported by the Engineering Export Promotion Council (India). Apart from these, more than 80 organization from India had exhibited at APE2011.
